*It’s time for another book review! I first read City of Bones years ago. I think I read the second book in The Mortal Instruments series too, but I’m not 100% sure. I quite enjoyed this book and I’m excited to read the rest of the books in the series. Grab a snack and drink and read on for everything you need to know about City of Bones.
Clary, our main character starts seeing things that her best friend Simon cannot. Soon after she starts seeing things (and people) her mother is kidnapped. Clary soon discovers that the world she thought she knew is a far cry from the world that really exists. Join Clary, Simon, and a mysterious boy named Jace as they fight to find Clary’s mom and figure out who, or what, Clary really is.
Character: The assortment of characters in this book is awesome! There are so many different personalities and I think that Clare did a great job blending them all together. My favorites were Jace and Simon. I usually struggle to like female main characters but I like Clary.
World-Building: So this could be a little better. For an almost 500 page book, it felt like it was lacking in this department. It feels like the author is withholding information from the reader to add mystery to the story rather than being too lazy to flesh out the world a bit more. It’s better I think because I’ve read books where you can tell the author was just not telling you things and I hated it.
Plot: The plot was fairly easy to guess most of the time. It is YA so it does lean more to the simple side of the spectrum. It was an enjoyable book regardless.
Writing style: Pretty basic writing style here. It didn’t add to the story but it also didn’t take away from it. It wasn’t full of errors or confusing scenes. So, while it was simple, I found no issues with it.
Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book. There is quite a lot of sarcastic banter and I really enjoyed it.
“Sarcasm is the last refuge of the imaginatively bankrupt.”-Cassandra Clare, City of Bones
“The meek may inherit the earth, but at the moment it belongs to the conceited. Like me.”-Cassandra Clare, City of Bones
“You’re an idiot.”-Cassandra Clare, City of Bones
“I’ve never claimed to be otherwise.”
“What do you want?”-Cassandra Clare, City of Bones
“Just coffee. Black – like my soul.”
I enjoyed this book pretty well. It was easy to get sucked into and there was plenty of action. I love books with action in them. It wasn’t amazing but it was a great start to a series.
I gave City of Bones by Cassandra Clare 3.5/5 stars.
Happy reading friends,
