Bookish Life

Are You the Only Reader You Know?

*Reading is one of my favorite hobbies. Snuggling up with a good book is the best ways I can spend my free time. Often times as readers we can feel a little isolated. Usually, there’s only one person who is a voracious reader in the house. I was the only reader for a long long time. Thankfully I’m not the only one anymore.

Quick backstory.

Once upon a time, I was the only reader in my house. None of my siblings read books and it was the way I escaped the awful reality that was my home life. The love of my life was the library and the fictional friends I made in the pages of books. Reading saved my sanity more times than I can count.

Somewhere between finishing high school and my late 20s, I lost my love of reading. If I did read it was nonfiction only. I felt guilty for reading books for fun, and since I was in college there wasn’t much time for reading anyway. Finally, after our second son was born I somehow rediscovered my love of books. I think it all started with a Harry Potter readathon hosted by G (@book_roast). That was in 2018 and I’ve never looked back. I’ve learned a lot of things about myself and my bookish habits. But it has been SO fun. It was like finding a piece of me that had been lost for a very long time.

My favorite reading partner.

Now that I’m reading books again I’m so thankful that my husband reads books with me too. He can’t read as much as I can. Nor does he want to but it’s so much fun to be able to read and talk about books together.

So far we’ve read A Court of Thorns and Roses series and the Throne of Glass series together. One of the only reasons he reads now is because I shoved A Court of Thorns and Roses in his hands and said, “You have to read this!” Go me!

For the love of reading.

It’s been so great to rediscover my love of reading with my husband. I know that most people aren’t that lucky when it comes to their favorite hobby. Most of the time they can feel isolated because none of their real-life friends read. I’ve been there. One thing that has really helped me is Bookstagram.

I’m sure you’ve heard of Bookstagram. If you haven’t you should check it out!! It’s one of the greatest book communities out there and I love being part of it. I started out just enjoying other people’s posts about books, but I’ve been an active bookstagrammer for over a year now and I will probably never stop.

It is so good to find your reading tribe. I read mostly fantasy but there is a bookstagram community for basically any genre of books. Just search for some hashtags and you are well on your way to finding your new best friends. 🙂

The next generation of readers.

Since we have two boys I’m hoping with everything I’ve got that at least one of them will like reading books. They are 6 and 3 so it’s too hard to tell at the moment which one, or if both, will like reading. I make sure that we read books to them every day and they are always looking at books. I just hope that some of my reading enthusiasm will rub off on them.

What about you? Are you the only one in your family that reads? If not who are your other readers?

Happy reading,

Alicen
